Inmate from Fresno County dead, homicide investigation underway, officials say

SUSANVILLE, Calif. ( KSE E /KGPE ) – A homicide investigation is underway following the death of an incarcerated man from Fresno County, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

Officers with the prison say on Aug. 21 at around 5:45 p.m., they responded when incarcerated Luis Alvarez, received from Santa Clara County, and Vincent G. Martinez, received from Kings County were attacking Anthony Alvarez, received from Fresno County, in a dayroom.

After the incident, staff immediately began life-saving measures on Anthony Alvarez, but the CDCR says the 29-year-old was pronounced deceased at 6:23 p.m. after being taken to the prison’s triage and treatment area.

Officials say they recovered two inmate-manufactured weapons.

The CDRC states officials have limited movement in the yard where the attack occurred. Luis Alvarez and Martinez have been placed in restricted housing pending an investigation by the prison’s Investigative Services Uniy and the Lassen County District’s Attorney’s Office.

The Lassen County Coroner will determine Alvarez’s official cause of death.
