FRESNO, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – The Fresno State football team opens the 2024 season in less than a week at Michigan. The Bulldogs’ linebackers coach for the upcoming season is Ben Watkins.

Watkins is in his fifth season on Fresno State’s staff. He originally joined the Bulldogs’ program as a graduate assistant and has continuously worked his way up the ladder. He’s spent the past few years as a linebackers assistant coach under Tim Skipper.

Skipper stepped into a bigger role this season as interim head coach due to Jeff Tedford stepping down. Now, his assistant Watkins has the opportunity to lead the linebackers. “This is the most important role I’ve had” said Watkins.

Tim Skipper also handed the reins of the LB room to Watkins during the New Mexico Bowl. So the Omaha native has experience leading the position group in a live game.

“Coach Skipper is still heavily involved with the linebackers. Its been great to use him as a resource and a mentor. Personal relationships is really something I’ve taken from him” said Watkins.

Fresno State’s defense is focused on physicality as they prepare for Michigan.

“We’re focused on striking blocks and our willingness to tackle. The main thing for us going into game one is to be physical and tough. Its what we’ve been emphasizing” said Watkins.

The Bulldogs’ season opener is set for Saturday, August 31 at Michigan. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 pm PST. You can catch Fresno State vs. Michigan on KSEE 24.
