MERCED, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – A pedestrian passed away after an initial hit-and-run and then being hit again by another vehicle in Merced, the Merced Police Department said.

Officers say a man in his 40s was crossing E. Yosemite Avenue near Cordova Avenue on Monday just before 9 p.m. At the same time, a vehicle believed to be a Toyota was traveling eastbound and hit the pedestrian. The vehicle then fled the scene and the pedestrian was left in the roadway.

Later, police say a Honda Civic then struck the pedestrian in the roadway. The Honda immediately pulled out of the road and stayed on the scene to wait for the police. The pedestrian was found deceased on the scene when officers arrived.

The Police Department is asking anyone with information regarding the collision to contact Traffic Officer C McKeeman at 209-388-7752 or by email at mckeemanc@cityofmerced.org. or Traffic Officer D Drees at 209-388-7809 or by email at dreesd@cityofmerced.org.

The identity of the pedestrian has not been released.
