WATCH: Deputies rescue cow from Fresno County canal

FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – A cow managed to fall into a Fresno County canal on Friday morning, but deputies were able to rescue the bovine before it was too late.

Around 11:45 a.m. deputies say they received a report of a cow floating in the Friant Kern Canal near Ashlan and Riverbend Avenues.

After it was determined the cow was alive, Deputy Kirkpatrick and Deputy Westbrook entered the canal near Clinton Avenue, east of Riverbend Avenue. Once in the water, they attached the cow to a rope and pulled it to safety out of the canal.

Deputies say the cow is in good health and is in the process of being reunited with its owner.

According to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office, this is Deputy Kirkpatrick’s second cow canal rescue. He rescued his first cow from a canal earlier this year on May 2 near Napa and Gale Avenues between Huron and Coalinga.

The Sheriff’s Office says Kirkpatrick was specifically trained for large animal rescues by the Central California Animal Disaster Team. Deputies Kirkpatrick and Westbrook are both trained in swift water rescues.
