FRESNO, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – A proposition that will put in California’s constitution the right for anyone to marry – regardless of their race, gender or sexual orientation – is going to the ballot in November. Those pushing for it say Proposition 3 is crucial “now more than ever.”

Proposition 3, the Freedom to Marry initiative, will enshrine the freedom to marry in the California state constitution. Beatrice Biaz, a program manager for Equality California and a lifelong resident of the Central Valley, says that rights often taken for granted are under threat.

“Prop 3 strengthens legal protections for marriage equality, making it clear that in California, these rights are non-negotiable,” Biaz said.

Biaz also says that the proposition passed without a single no vote in the California legislature with bipartisan support showing that equality is a cornerstone of Californian values.

Fresno-area State Assemblymember Arambula joined advocates and speakers advocating for the passage of Prop 3 in November.

“It should be no surprise that I’m standing shoulder-to-shoulder, fighting to make sure that we have marriage equality and the passage of Prop 3,” Arambula said.

Arambula says that he has already voted to put this proposition before the people as it came through the legislature.

“For so many of us, we see this as simple human rights.”

Arambula says anyone in the community should be free to love who they want to love, and that means that they have to go to the people and have them participate in making democracy better. He says it’s to declare that California is an inclusive state that allows all to marry who they want to marry.

“All people who are in Fresno County should be voting for Proposition 3 this upcoming November,” he said.
