MADERA COUNTY, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – A social media trend is behind the potential threat against a Madera high school and the ensuing Friday the 13th lockdown, deputies say.

According to the Madera County Sheriff’s Office, Minarets High School initiated a lockdown around 2:30 p.m. on Friday after deputies were made aware of a “potential threat” on campus.

After nearly two and a half hours of sweeping the campus, sheriff’s officials say they found no evidence of any potential threat.

On Monday, deputies say they were made aware that Friday’s incident was related to a nationwide social media trend where various threats against schools were called into law enforcement agencies across the country on Friday the 13th.

The Sheriff’s Office wants to remind the community that making violent threats is a crime and anyone caught doing so can be prosecuted.
