SHAVER LAKE, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – A steer was hit and killed on the road between Shaver Lake and Huntington Lakes in Fresno County, according to the California Highway Patrol.

According to a social media post by the CHP on Wednesday, officers say the driver passed a livestock warning sign and then went on to hit the steer.

Officers say the signs are to inform drivers that they are driving in “Open Range” and may encounter livestock in or near the roadway at any time.

CHP adds that if anyone sees any livestock in the road call 911 so they can identify and remove hazards to prevent further incidents. They also say that leaving the scene of injured or lifeless animals on the road endangers more drivers.
