YOSEMITE, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – A marmot, an animal that is known to inhabit Yosemite’s high Sierras was recently rescued after hiding in a vehicle’s engine compartment in a city in El Dorado County — an area that they are not native to, the El Dorado County Fire Protection District said on Tuesday.

Officials with El Dorado’s County Fire Protection District say the marmot was found inside a vehicle, inside a fire station in Pollock Pines, a city in El Dorado County.

According to officials, a local resident recently visited Yosemite and was shocked to discover one hiding within the engine compartment of her vehicle.

Firefighters assisted in removing some vehicle components to access the marmot. Officials say that the California Department of Fish and Wildlife responded and assisted in safely removing the marmot from the vehicle.

Officials say that marmots are known to inhabit Yosemite’s high county above 6,500′ elevation.

The marmot was secured and will be relocated back home, according to officials.
