FRESNO, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – A man has been arrested on suspicion of felony assault after police say he assaulted a man sleeping in Fresno’s Tower District.

Security video released last month showed a man kicking someone repeatedly outside a business in Fresno’s Tower District , the Fresno Police Department said. Following that incident, investigators worked to identify the person responsible for the attack.

Man who allegedly assaulted sleeping victim in Fresno was ‘having a bad day’

Police announced on Thursday that they have identified the suspect as 25-year-old Roberto Felipe Olivera.

According to police, on Aug. 26 at 2 a.m. officers responded to the 936 East Olive Avenue regarding a report of an assault. The person who called 911 told dispatch that a man sleeping in front of the business had just been physically assaulted.

Officers say the 47-year-old victim was conscious but suffering from significant injuries to the head. He was taken to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno for treatment. Police say the victim could only tell officials that he was asleep and suddenly awoken after being repeatedly struck in the head.

Detectives worked with businesses and residents to identify the suspect, named as 25-year-old Roberto Felipe Olivera. Police say surveillance video from businesses captured the assault and assisted in the identification of the suspect.

According to police, Olivera was arrested on Wednesday; they worked with his family members and coordinated his surrender.

Olivera was booked into the Fresno County Jail for suspicion of felony assault.
