HANFORD, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – A man driving a Chevrolet Equinox was killed after CHP says the SUV veered off the road and struck a mailbox, before striking a tree.

Officers say they were alerted to the crash at around 7:40 p.m. in the area of Fremont Avenue, east of 21st Avenue, in Kings County. The location is close to Island Union Elementary School and north of Lemoore.

According to the CHP, the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox crashed into the mailbox, rolled onto its passenger side, and collided with a tree. The vehicle came to a rest in a nearby orchard. Officers say the 63-year-old driver suffered major injuries and died at the scene.

The identity of the man killed in the crash was not officially released.
