DA: Man sentenced in deadly shooting after softball in Tulare

TULARE COUNTY, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – A man who shot and killed a 28-year-old after a softball game in Tulare in 2019 has been sentenced to life in prison, the Tulare County District Attorney’s Office said on Friday.

In August 2019, the DA’s office says the Tulare Police Department responded to the Prosperity Sports Complex for a report of a gunshot victim. When officers arrived they located a man with numerous gunshot wounds. The victim was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Officials later identified the victim as 28-year-old Jesus Marquez.

According to the DA’s office, witnesses stated that after the softball game, the suspect, 31-year-old Christopher Gonzalez from McFarland (who did not play in the game) approached Marquez while standing next to his truck in the parking lot.

The DA’s office says that Gonzalez spoke to Marquez and then shot him. Gonzalez then drove away. Three days later, detectives were able to locate Gonzalez at a house in Shafter using cell phone pings.

On Aug. 26 of this year, Gonzalez pleaded no contest to felony first-degree murder, according to the DA.
