CLOVIS, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – The City of Clovis is inviting the community to a ribbon-cutting celebration on Saturday for the new improvements to the Gould Canal Trail.

According to the city, the Gould Canal Trail runs through the historic Helm Ranch area in southwest Clovis along the Fresno Irrigation District (FID) Gould Canal and has recently been transformed.

The city says that in the late 1800s, much of southwest Clovis was part of the Helm Ranch, which was owned by William Helm. Currently, the area is home to hundreds of Clovis residents, according to the city, and is most often recognized by the signs that adorn that part of Clovis.

The transformation includes several pedestrian-friendly features that enhance the trail’s accessibility, the city says.

According to the city, the history had inspired multiple improvements along the trail, including a new gateway monument and a concrete pedestal for a historic tank house sign. Additional improvements include a portal connecting to Helm Ranch Park, a trail rest stop, a masonry wall, a path, fence improvements and more.

City officials say that the newly improved trail was made possible by a grant funding partnership between the city and the FID.

The ribbon cutting celebration will be on Oct. 5 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Helm Ranch Park located at 91 W. Ashlan Ave.
