MERCED COUNTY, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – A 61-year-old woman from Madera died after the car she was driving was hit by a train near Le Grand Thursday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP says around 8 a.m. the woman was driving northbound in a 2007 Toyota SUV on Cunningham Road at Santa Fe Avenue.

The railroad crossing arms were down when the woman attempted to go around and was hit by a train traveling westbound, officers say. The vehicle was pushed approximately 100 feet off the roadway and into a dirt field before it stopped. The woman, who died at the scene, was not wearing a seatbelt, according to the CHP.

The identity of the woman killed was not officially released.
