MERCED COUNTY, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – A man died on Thursday following a two-vehicle collision over the weekend on Highway 99 in Merced County, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP says on Oct. 12 at around 7:01 p.m. they were advised of a traffic crash involving two vehicles in the area of Highway 99 southbound off-ramp at Shanks Road in Delhi.

During the course of the investigation, CHP says it was determined that a 26-year-old from Sacramento was driving a 2013 Hyundai on Highway 99 and exited at the Shanks Road off-ramp. The driver of the Hyundai stopped at the posted stop sign and limit line.

According to CHP, a 60-year-old driver from Delhi was driving a 1996 Chevrolet pickup truck and approached the intersection of the southbound Highway 99 off-ramp at approximately 50 mph.

CHP says the intersection at Shanks Road does not have posted stop signs for westbound and eastbound traffic.

For unknown reasons, CHP says the Hyundai driver failed to yield the right of way and drove into the intersection and into the path of the Chevrolet.

CHP says the front of the Chevrolet collided with the front driver of the Hyundai and then both cars traveled in a southwest direction and struck a metal guardrail located at the south shoulder of Shanks Road.

The 26-year-old was able to exit his vehicle but the 60-year-old remained in his pickup truck.

CHP says they began life-saving measures on the 60-year-old driver and he was transported to a local hospital. The 26-year-old suffered minor injuries as a result of the crash and stayed at the scene.

According to CHP, the 60-year-old driver of the Chevrolet died at the hospital on Thursday, Oct. 17.

The identity of the victim has not yet been released.

CHP says drugs or alcohol do not appear to be a factor in this crash. This is an ongoing investigation.
