TULARE COUNTY, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – A federal grant of $98.4 million is coming to Tulare County to improve over five miles of Highway 99.

The Tulare County Association of Governments says the six-lane widening and Paige Avenue interchange improvement project will add a lane in each direction for over 5 miles. It will also rebuild the interchange with Paige Avenue.

“This $98.4 million in federal funding will support dramatic improvement to Highway 99 in the City of Tulare, finally widening this section to six lanes to improve safety and reduce congestion,” TCAG Chairmain and City of Woodlake Mayor Rudy Mendoza said. “Highway 99 has been the most dangerous road in America for years, but we are changing that.”

According to officials, the Paige Avenue interchange would be rebuilt into a tight diamond interchange. The existing on and off-ramps would be removed and replaced with new ramps that would lead to and from either one or two multilane roundabouts.
