With the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics on the horizon, the city of Long Beach plans to spend in a big way to prepare for the Games.

According to reporting from the Los Angeles Times , the city will spend $933 million on infrastructure before the Games that take place a little less than four years from now.

The plan to improve infrastructure was unveiled last year, and about $210 million of that money will go toward preparing the city for the Olympics, The Times reports.

“I think 2028 is a huge opportunity for our entire region,” Mayor Rex Richardson told The Times.

The Sports Area and Marine Stadium will host some events while others will take place on the waterfront.

Of course, the large chunk of the nearly $1 billion in funding will go toward non-Olympics related projects. Much of it will go toward maintenence for existing public spaces and will be used to tackle the homelessness crisis in the form of shelters.

The 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles and surrounding areas is scheduled to start on Friday, July 14, 2028.
