FRESNO, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – The California Highway Patrol will be out in full force beginning Friday for the Labor Day holiday.

CHP says they are launching a statewide enforcement effort to keep the public safe on the roads through the weekend and into Monday.

Fresno ranks in top 10 of highest DUI rates in the United States, study says

During Labor Day 2023, CHP says 38 people were killed in crashes throughout the state. According to CHP, nearly half of the vehicle occupants who were killed in a crash within the CHP’s jurisdiction were not wearing a seat belt.

The statewide Maximum Enforcement Period will begin at 6:01 p.m. on Friday, and continue through 11:59 p.m. on Monday, September 2.

“Everyone’s safety is our top priority, so make responsible choices. Drive sober, stay focused and help keep our roads safe for all who use them,” said CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee. “Your decisions behind the wheel can save lives – yours and others.”

A study by LendingTree ranks Fresno sixth among the top 50 largest cities in the US for DUI rates between July 2023 and July 2024. Eight of the top ten cities on that list are in California. Fresno averages .9 DUI’s per 1,000 drivers and the study evaluated millions of insurance quotes.
