( WJET/WFXP ) — Wegmans and Sheetz have ranked in the top 10 in the PEOPLE Companies that Care. This list “compiles companies around the nation that best demonstrate outstanding respect, care and concern for their communities, their employees and the environment.”

Wegmans placed 7th on the list out of the 100 other companies. However, the company has historically ranked high on workplace lists as the #1 large workplace to work for the past 8 years. 91% of employees say that Wegmans is a great place to work, compared to the national average of 57%. The company describes itself as “…a values-based family company on a mission to help people live healthier better lives through exceptional food.”

The Rochester, New York-based company has 111 supermarkets with 53,784 employees across the East Coast. Wegmans began in 1916 with John and Walter Wegman becoming fresh produce pushcart peddlers. In 1930, the brothers made national headlines when they opened a 20,000-square-foot store, which was gigantic by 1930s standards. The company quickly grew into what it is today, with stores sprawling across 7 states.

Sheetz was founded in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in 1952 by Bob Sheetz after he purchased one of his dad’s dairy stores. The company is still run by the Sheetz family, with Travis Sheetz serving as the current CEO & President.
