Beef prices rise, but Virginia cattle farmers see little profit gains

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — According to a report from the Virginia Farm Bureau, beef prices are near record highs, but Virginia cattle farmers are seeing little the way of profit gains. The Farm Bureau says that is because higher input costs for things like feed and fuel are cutting into revenues.

Another issue affecting Virginia livestock farmers in general and cattle farmers in particular is the low number of slaughter and processing facilities in Virginia. They need federal approval. Right now, many farmers have to ship livestock to facilities in Kentucky and North Carolina for processing. It is a problem Virginia’s Congressional Delegation is aware of.

“The number one request of farmers in the 9th District is we want more slaughterhouses,” said Rep. Morgan Griffith (R-VA 9th). “We’re having a hard time getting our livestock slaughtered so it can go to market.”

Griffith estimates southwest Virginia needs three additional slaughter facilities. Many cattle and sheep farmers in the region agree with that number.

It will take a huge financial outlay and infrastructure development to make it happen, and will require help on the federal, state, and local levels. However, experts say the investment would help the region’s economy.

This sounds like good investment, keeping things more 'local' helps shipping COSTS to facilities in other States, Creating Jobs which in turn helps the Economy, not sure why there would be an issue getting the funding?
