(WHTM)– Pennsylvania repaired more bridges in poor condition than any other state last year, with significant progress being made in 2024, according to PennDOT.

Governor Shapiro and PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll announced today that Pennsylvania repaired the most poor-condition bridges out of any other state in 2023, according to Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) data.

FHWA data showed that PennDOT, the PA Turnpike, and other bridge owners replaced or repaired more than 200 bridges in 2023. This achievement resulted in 90 fewer bridges being classified as in poor condition.

PennDOT says this is the largest improvement in the country.

But things haven’t slowed down in 2024. The Shapiro Administration has had a focus on infrastructure in 2024, advancing projects for more than 300 state and locally-owned bridges.

Pennsylvania had more than 6,000 bridges classified as “poor condition” in 2008. Today, that number has been cut in half, PennDOT said. With additional infrastructure funding through Shapiro’s first two budgets, the pace of repairs is increasing.

In 2024, PennDOT says it has improved over 3,1000 miles of roadway, including 1,100 miles of paving, and has made significant advancements for bridge improvement.

“Infrastructure is critical to our Commonwealth’s progress, and our ability to complete major projects is key to spurring economic growth and creating real opportunity,” said Governor Shapiro. “Investing in and improving our infrastructure is a commonsense way to spur economic development, create jobs, and help Pennsylvanians reach their destinations safely and efficiently. These improvements will help our communities grow as we continue working together to move Pennsylvania forward.”

In September, Shapiro announced an investment of over $51 million in funding from the Multimodal Transportation Fund. PennDOT says these funds will go toward 66 transportation projects across 32 counties in Pennsylvania.

Governor Shapiro has secured over $300 million in total infrastructure funding to maintain Pennsylvania’s roads and bridges.
