    New York man arrested for damaging statue with sledgehammer

    ( WJET/WFXP ) – A New York man was taken into custody after damaging a statue with a sledgehammer.

    On Oct. 14, at about 4:03 a.m., Jamestown Police Department officers reported hearing a “loud banging noise” in the area of North Main St. near the viaduct in Brooklyn Square.

    Investigation underway in Forest County after kayakers find human remains

    According to a report, officers located 37-year-old Tony J. Stebbins, of Jamestown, near the bronze canoe statue in the park and later learned Stebbins was hitting the statue with a sledgehammer, causing damage to its legs.

    The statue’s value is estimated at around $1,500. Stebbins was arrested and charged with felony criminal mischief in the second degree.

    He was transported to Jamestown City Jail and is being held pending arraignment in Jamestown City Court.
