City of Erie Mayor Joe Schember took a stop Friday morning to read to kids at Saint James School.

The mayor chose to read the book “My Daddy”, written by Martin Luther King III about his father. The kids were able to sit and listen to the mayor as well as chat with him a bit about what he does.

Mayor Schember said that he wanted to bring the story of Martin Luther King Jr. to the children because he believes it’s an important piece of American history that can help shape the future of Erie.

“It means a lot to me to come and read to kids in school because those kids are the future of Erie. I actually kind of wish I would have told them that as well, because I really believe that. They probably don’t even think about it at this point, but they are the future,” said Shember.

Mayor Schember said that he’s grateful for the opportunity to have an impact on Erie’s youth.
