As many Erie natives know, Erie’s winter weather can be pretty intense despite these past few relatively mild winters.

That’s why ahead of Erie’s first snowfall, many interested in Erie’s weather got an inside look as to what to expect.

The Erie County Public Library held its annual winter SKYWARN training on Saturday.

JET 24/FOX 66’s very own Tom Atkins presented to the class and presented information on how Erie winter weather develops, how it’s forecasted and measured in the area especially since Cleveland’s radar doesn’t quite reach Erie reliably.

“One of the things that’s important is that we do get really bad weather here, or at least we can get really bad weather here in erie, and so training people on how to spot that weather, and what to do in that weather and how to report that weather is very important,” said Rachel Stevenson, adult programming librarian for the Erie County Public Library. “So if we can report it, then people will know here what to do, when to take cover if it’s a tornado or something like that, and how to best prepare themselves for winter weather.”

The library will be hosting two more SKYWARN sessions in the spring.
