In a previous article, I discussed how positive aging requires you to often be your own advocate regarding your health. Whether you take the time to read food labels or conduct research on nutrition, finding the answers you need can at times feel overwhelming.

Readers requested sharing additional avenues and efforts available locally that could promote the maintenance of good health and aging positively.

One option is VillagesOKC, a membership-based nonprofit organization with a wide array of helpful resources that promotes aging positively. Its motto ― “Aging in Place” ― aims to “empower adults to age with vitality and purpose.” It is a community of people who are dedicated to linking up with others and sharing information that promotes aging gracefully.

My mother, Bobbie Gray Diffie-Gunn, and I find this organization so valuable that we are both members. Membership costs $250 a year. Each month, the calendar is packed with activities ― special events, conferences, educational classes, wellness groups and smaller social meetups. Every senior can participate in and learn something new, while also gaining insight into various health topics.

Efforts that promote aging positively include finding a doctor who is always patient and eager to listen to your concerns. VIPcare offers primary care for seniors in Oklahoma. This medical group of health care professionals promises more time with the doctor at every visit, and a focus on preventative care. It also has a “Better Health Club” rewards program, and health, wellness and social events in a group called “Healthy 55.”

Another organization focused on aging positively is Wellness & Longevity, led by Dr. Paul Rothwell. He’s been practicing medicine for over 50 years and works closely with nutritionists for seniors. He will take time to teach you how to read food and medical labels, including the fine print. IV therapies are offered designed to restore vitality, balance and overall better health. Dr. Rothwell and his team truly strive to offer medical care that provides healing for the body, mind and spirit.

On the journey of positive aging, it is valuable to consider how we age on the inside and outside to look and feel our best.Reclaim Aesthetics and Wellness, located in Yukon, helps with aesthetic enhancements and holistic wellness, including anti-aging treatments, hormone replacement therapies, and a guide and support for weight loss. Services also aim to restore the body's vital nutrients, elevate the immune system and increase energy levels.

The Oklahoma Department of Human Services' Multisector Plan on Aging is an option you might not have been aware of. Its goal is “to give every senior the confidence to live life on their term and to provide them with the resources needed to lead a healthy lifestyle.” This plan addresses the current and common issues that seniors in Oklahoma may be facing. You can sign up to receive updates; if you have questions, send an email to cap.mpa@okdhs.org.

My hope is you will research one or more of these recommendations to see if they are right for you. I have firsthand experience in receiving the benefits that several of them have to offer, and I am grateful for what they have added to my life. It is certainly worth the time and effort to discover what your mind, body and spirit need to be assured of aging positively.
