Deitrick Haddon Puts a Gospel Spin on the National Anthem

Deitrick Haddon and the State Fair Gospel choir brought down the house with a soulful rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner at the State Fair Classic this past weekend.

Haddon provided the pre-show entertainment for this year’s State Fair Classic. The State Fair Classic is an annual college football game between Grambling State University and Prairie View A&M University of the Southwester Athletic Conference at the Cotton Bowl. It happens during the State Fair of Texas in Dallas each year. Prairie View went on to win the game after five overtimes 36-34. Veteran rapper Big Daddy Kane put on the post-game performance.

The sound of the choir and D Haddy permeating through the stadium to kick off the State Fair Classic. Each word of the National Anthem being sung with a finesse that’s not uncommon in a Black chorus. Haddon spoke about putting a twist on the centuries-old song in a brief interview with National Show Bands on Instagram.

“Dallas, TX his the greatest,” he said. “It’s is the home of some of the greatest gospel artists and the choir was incredible. We’re proud to be Americans and that National Anthem will never be the same.”

Haddon is no stranger to pushing the envelope when it comes to his music. In August, he told Get Up! Mornings with Erica Campbell he believes in limitless creativity all while adhering to traditional Christian values.

“When it comes to the gospel, I’m apostolic, Pentecostal, and holiness,” he said. “But with my artistry, there’s no limit to creativity when representing God.”

Haddon wrapped up a tour alongside Anthony Brown, Bri Babineaux and Pastor Mike Jr. this summer. As for what’s next for his artistry, he went on to tell Get Up! Mornings he’s working on some theater ambitions while also remaining involved in shooting movies.

“I’m working on a stage play that’s going to hit the road,” he said. “It’s incredible, and I can’t wait for everyone to see it.”
