This Fourth of July, as our country celebrated its 248th year as a nation, we took the opportunity to pause and reflect on our shared identity as Americans. Independence Day is a momentous time to recognize and celebrate our nation's strength and feel gratitude for the many wonderful reasons we are proud to be Americans — and Ohioans. July Fourth is more than just a date on the calendar — it's a day of deep significance and one of the best celebrations of the year.

Looking ahead, we are excitedly preparing for our country’s 250th birthday in 2026. The formation of the Ohio Commission for the U.S. Semiquincentennial (America 250-Ohio) underscores our commitment to honor our great state's role in shaping our nation's past, present and future. Serving on this commission is an incredible honor, as we aspire to raise awareness, instill pride, and showcase and celebrate Ohio’s many significant contributions to the fabric of our great nation.

In the coming years, our focus will be on highlighting Ohio's pivotal moments and the remarkable people who have shaped our country. From historic milestones to current initiatives, we aim to celebrate the spirit of American greatness, with Ohioans at the heart and soul of our narrative.

In particular, nestled in Muskingum County, our community takes immense pride in our rich heritage and storied history. From the iconic Y Bridge spanning the confluence of the Licking and Muskingum rivers to the towering presence of the Big Muskie, once the largest dragline excavator in the world, our region is steeped in historical significance. The Jessie Owens State Park area, part of The Wilds and in partnership with the Columbus Zoo, stands as a testament to our commitment to conservation and education, showcasing an African habitat in what was once a thriving coal mining area. Speaking of coal, the history of mining runs deep here, shaping our landscape and economy for generations.

In May, America 250-Ohio announced the creation of the Ohio Air and Space Trail, linking over 30 historic air and space sites across the state. Ohio has been critical to aviation, from the Wright Brothers to the US Space Force. You can be sure that John Glenn's birthplace in New Concord is a prominent stop on the Trail. Muskingum County has been home to trailblazers like Glenn, as well as Zane Grey, the famed author whose literary works continue to captivate readers worldwide. The City of Zanesville, our county seat, bears a legacy as the former state capital of Ohio and is renowned for its pottery production, earning the moniker Clay City. Not far from Zanesville lies Duncan Falls, where significant battles occurred along the river during the westward expansion, underscoring our region's role in shaping America's frontier. Moreover, Muskingum County was a crucial route on the Underground Railroad, offering freedom to many seeking escape from oppression.

As proud residents of Muskingum County, we look forward to sharing these remarkable stories and celebrating our heritage with visitors and locals alike. Our region's diverse history continues to inspire and educate, reminding us of our important place in Ohio's past and its enduring impact on the nation.

Both America and Ohio benefit from reminders of what makes us exceptional. Our 250th birthday presents a historic opportunity to reflect on our shared values and renew our commitment to a united future, embracing what connects us as Americans and Ohioans — a privilege that we are proud to celebrate together.

State Rep. Adam Holmes of Nashport is serving his second term in the Ohio House of Representatives. He represents the 97th Ohio House District, which includes all of Muskingum County and western Guernsey County. Megan Kvamme of Muskingum County is an entrepreneur rooted in the Ohio business community. She is serving on the America 250-Ohio Commission and involved in local philanthropy.
