Zebulon to host public budget forum

The town of Zebulon will host a public engagement event June 3 to hear feedback on next year’s budget from local residents.

The forum, which attendees can participate in either in person, or by submitting comments online that will be read aloud during the forum, aims to facilitate dialogue between residents and town officials on different components of the budget.

“The annual budget is arguably the town’s most important policy passed each year,” Kaleb Harmon, the town’s communication director, said. “It establishes our priorities, sets the tone of our town for years to come, and dictates how we can better serve our residents.”

The proposed town budget for next year comes to a little over $28.5 million, a figure that represents more than a $6 million jump from this current fiscal year’s allocation plan.

Harmon says that while the budget addresses critical, short-term needs like salaries for town personnel, civic infrastructure, public safety, and community events, it also addresses long-term projects like park improvements green way trails, roadway and intersection improvements, and a new fire station.

The budget must be voted on and approved by town officials prior to July 1.

The forum will start at 6 p.m. in the Zebulon town hall.
