The town of Zebulon has appointed Zebulon Public Works Director Chris Ray to serve as the interim assistant town manager.
Ray will provide additional support for the Manager’s Office, Town staff, and the Board of Commissioners as the town searches for a permanent town manager and assistant town manager. He serves as Zebulon’s first assistant town manager in more than 20 years.

“As Zebulon navigates this critical transitionary period, we are grateful to have Chris Ray step into the role of Interim Assistant Town Manager and help lead our Town,” said Taiwo Jaiyeoba, interim town manager of Zebulon. “Chris has served the Town of Zebulon diligently for 31 years, overseeing the Finance Department and Public Works Department during his time, and brings immense experience and institutional knowledge to the position. As we look to our day-to-day operations and long-term priorities, Chris’s leadership will be essential as we work to meet the needs of our Town’s constituents, communities, and future.”

Ray has more than three decades of service to the town of Zebulon, reaching his 30 th anniversary with the town in 2023. He most recently served as the town’s public works director, managing a team of 19 employees, and previously served five years as the assistant finance director.

He also brings with him a wealth of notable accomplishments for the Town, including:

    • Constructing major roadway and infrastructure projects.
    • Leading emergency management and response through a variety of natural disasters.
    • Overseeing key renovations to Five County Stadium, Town Hall, the Zebulon Police Station, and the Zebulon Community Center.
    • Constructing Zebulon’s first public-built greenway.
    • Managing the Town’s construction inspection, project management, streets, stormwater, solid waste, facilities and grounds maintenance, and yard waste programs.

“I am honored to have been asked to step into the Interim Assistant Town Manager role and look forward to continuing my service to Zebulon in the new position,” Ray said. “Working with my colleagues across Zebulon’s nine departments, we will continue to provide high levels of service to our community while we plan and prepare for the future of our town. This is an important time in Zebulon’s transition and I’m eager to continue making this a smooth and seamless process for our staff, our citizens, and our town.”

Ray was appointed by Jaiyeoba and is expected to serve throughout the transition period as the town works to identify a permanent town manager and assistant town manager.

The town is currently in the hiring process for the permanent assistant town manager.
