The Zebulon Board of Commissioners passed a town budget for next year during a work session meeting Tuesday night.

The budget, which grew this year to just over $28.5 million, will serve as the town’s spending plan for next year.

It includes s property tax rate of 57.7 cents per $100 of assessed property value. The original budget called for a tax rate of 57.5 cents, but a movement among board members to better fund town police, fire, and EMS services prompted them to suggest, and eventually pass, a higher tax rate.

“While I would like no tax increase, I think that a small increase is a lot more manageable than some of the other options that we had on the table,” Commissioner Shannon Baxter said. “And while it is uncomfortable, I think that it’s a stretch that is not out of the realm of good decision making.”

The budget also includes funds for park acquisition, a program director at the community center, a new parks maintenance technician, and more.
