Minnesota cracks down on misclassification of employees as independent contractors
Minnesota is cracking down on businesses who pay employees less than the minimum wage by misclassifying them as independent contractors. A new law combating this type of fraud went into effect in July but some industries continue to cut corners.

Below are this week’s Cannon Falls Beacon news briefs:. The CCIC sponsored Community Dinner will be Saturday, Aug. 31. The Community Dinners are served the last Saturday of every month. Serving is at 5 p.m. at the First Congregational Church Fellowship Hall located at 220 W. Main St. in Cannon Falls. The Fellowship Hall is handicap accessible. There is no cost for the meal. All are welcome to come and share the fellowship and dinner together.
Program helps students in need of support
KASSON, Minn.-As inflation and grocery prices continue to rise, many are turning to food banks, food shelves and backpack programs for assistance. For Kasson-Mantorville kids, 'Food For Friends' is a backpack program that began in 2016 as a way to support kids participating in free and reduced lunch. Once all kids were able to eat free, the program switched to kids and families in need.
Byron XC season gets underway

Two Indicted for Trafficking Methamphetamine, Fentanyl in the Rochester Area
MINNEAPOLIS – Two individuals have been indicted on drug trafficking conspiracy and firearm charges, announced U.S. Attorney Andrew M. Luger. According to court documents, between June 1, 2024, and July 21, 2024, Donald Ray Sanderson, 41, and Lindsey Wade Stolpa, 29, knowingly and intentionally conspired with each other to distribute methamphetamine and fentanyl in the Rochester area. The defendants were allegedly found in possession of more than 14 kilograms of methamphetamine and over 200 fentanyl pills after Sanderson led law enforcement on a high-speed chase that led to a several-hour standoff on Interstate 35 in Faribault. Multiple agencies were involved in the standoff and Sanderson's arrest.
