Cannon Falls Area Historical Society: Christmas in July hits Cannon Falls
You may have heard the term “Christmas in July.” This two-day celebration started in 1933 at a girl’s camp in Brevard, North Carolina. However, if you asked six young Cannon Falls boys back on July 3, 1893, they may disagree. That is the date that Santa Claus, aka Cliff W. Gress, gave these six boys a big surprise.
Final count is almost 5,000 pounds of food to the food shelf
The food drive for the Cannon Falls Food Shelf wrapped up this spring with some impressive totals: 2,247 pounds of food were donated by the community during the month of March. Wangen Prairie Church, which organized and staffed the food drive at Family Fare, pledged to match that poundage. In fact, as its match, in the last three weeks, Wangen Prairie Church purchased over 2,600 pounds of additional food from Family Fare and brought that back to the church for the final weigh in as well.
Northfield's 1st jazz festival set for Way Park
During Northfield's inaugural jazz festival on Sunday afternoon, July 14, Way Park will be swinging to the sweet notes of three different groups, all led by Northfield resident jazz musicians. The afternoon festival, which starts at 1 p.m. and stretches until 5 p.m., features pianist Laura Caviani, vibraphonist Dave Hagedorn and trombonist JC Sanford. Each set will be 60 minutes, with time added in for the musicians to set up their instruments. ...
Winona City Council OKs police station site
In another step toward a new joint law enforcement center downtown, the Winona City Council approved 165 West Second Street as the site for the next phase of design work on Monday. City Manager Chad Ubl said city staff will continue working with the state to release funding for the project, as well as reconvene the city-county task force to narrow the scope of the project before the city enters an agreement with architects for more detailed design work in the coming months.
Weather forces cancelation of 4th Fest in Rochester
ROCHESTER, Minn. – The 4th Fest Independence Day event and fireworks have been canceled in Rochester. City official say the event and fireworks require extensive dry-weather set-up time, making a successful show Thursday evening too difficult to prepare. 4th Fest had been planned for 6 to 10:30 pm in Soldiers Field Memorial Park. If weather permits, the fireworks will be rescheduled for Friday.
