Minneapolis officials want to make it easies to turn office towers into housing
Minneapolis officials want to make it easier — and cheaper — for developers to convert office towers, schools, and other buildings into apartments and condos. Why it matters: Replacing office workers with residents has been a post-pandemic dream to revitalize downtowns across the U.S., but Minneapolis has been home to few conversion projects since 2020.Driving the news: Council members Katie Cashman and Michael Rainville, who each represent parts of downtown, have introduced an ordinance specifically for conversions that would speed up review times by 1-2 months, do away with the need for a public hearing and temporarily exempt converted buildings from an...
Storm chances stick through mid week
There will be at least a slight chance of showers and t-storms Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday across our area. Some of those storms may be severe on Tuesday and Wednesday. Tuesday morning should start out dry across our area, but dry conditions may not last long for portions of our area. There is increasing confidence in a mid to late morning round of showers and t-storms moving in from the west. Once this round passes through, additional development may be possible during the afternoon, but this is not a guarantee, nor is everyone guaranteed to see rain.

Midwest sees surge in calls to poison control centers amid bumper crop of wild mushrooms
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The warm, soggy summer across much of the Midwest has produced a bumper crop of wild mushrooms — and a surge in calls to poison control centers. At the Minnesota Regional Poison Center, calls from April through July more than tripled over the same period last year, said Samantha Lee, the center’s director. The center took 90 calls for potential exposures over that period, compared to 26 calls for the same months in 2023. Exposures include people who have had actual or suspected contact with potentially poisonous mushrooms and who may or may not develop symptoms, she said. The cases can include kids who didn’t know what they were doing and foragers who make mistakes, she said. But those numbers don’t include people who are merely curious about whether the mushrooms popping out of their yards are good to eat. “Fortunately the majority of the time these tend to be mild symptoms,” Lee said. “A lot of these are mushrooms that were in the yard or nearby parks. Many of these cause upset stomachs, vomiting and diarrhea, but every year we do get some cases with serious outcomes.”
