NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Eric Bowannie, 26, is facing federal charges after being accused of having an hours-long standoff and firing shots at FBI agents and tribal police officers.

According to a criminal complaint, a family disturbance escalated into a standoff with law enforcement on July 6, 2024. Bowannie is accused of barricading himself in a residence and firing at Zuni Police Department officers when they arrived on scene. Bowannie allegedly charged officers with an ax before getting a shotgun from a bedroom and continuing to shoot at officers.

FBI agents responded to the scene and Bowannie refused to comply with officers and agents. During the standoff Bowannie is accused of moving between windows and the door of the residence firing multiple rounds at responding law enforcement. Bowannie tried to escape by crawling out of the back of the residence and was taken into custody. In an interview with law enforcement Bowannie said his initial plan was “suicide by cop” but changed his mind. Bowannie faces up to 27 years behind bars if convicted of his charges.
