13 states with Republican governors opt out of summer food program for kids
A new, permanent summer grocery program will help nearly 21 million kids across 37 states get enough to eat this year while school’s out. But Iowa and 12 other states with Republican governors have opted out of the federal program, citing their opposition to what they deride as “welfare” and their unwillingness to cover administrative […] The post 13 states with Republican governors opt out of summer food program for kids appeared first on Iowa Capital Dispatch.
Iowa Project AWARE Begins Cleanup Of Skunk River This Week
Over the next week, hundreds of volunteers are canoeing across the Skunk River in the KCII listening area as part of the Iowa Project AWARE annual river cleanup. An acronym for A Watershed Awareness River Expedition, Iowa Project AWARE began with the DNR in 2003 before moving to the non-profit N-Compass Incorporated. Event Director, Nina Marquardt shared the mission of their efforts with KCII. “Iowa Project AWARE is a volunteer river cleanup organization that goes to a different river in Iowa every year by canoe and clean up all of the visible trash and recycle as much as possible. We tent camp together at night and then in the evenings we hold educational programs in camps.”
The Last Man Ever Put to Death in the State of Iowa
Iowa is one of 23 states (along with Washington D.C.) that have abolished Capital Punishment. However, that wasn't always the case. The last time the state of Iowa performed the Death Penalty within its borders was in 1963. The practice would be banned statewide two years later, although there have been several efforts to bring it back in recent years.
Extreme heat and floods are back in the Midwest. How does climate change play in?
“Because our climate is changing overall, there’s pieces of climate change no matter what happens,” said the director of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Midwest Climate Hub
DNR Looking for Help with Annual Turkey Survey
(Lewis) The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is asking for the public’s help with its wild turkey production survey for July and August. John Lorenzen, with the DNR Office in Lewis, says participants are to note the date and the county where the turkey was seen, mark down if it is an adult female or male, and indicate the number of poults present. Lorenzen says the DNR uses the information to gauge next year’s population in part by nest success.

This poses a challenge for people with hearing impairments. WIC Benefits Can Now Be Redeemed Through Online Order And Pick Up Through Hy-Vee App
Iowa Woman Infant and Children (WIC) has partnered with Hy-Vee to offer more convenient shopping for those enrolled in the nutritional program. The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Special Supplemental Nutrition Program WIC is now available to purchase accepted items for online ordering and pick up. HHS started exploring the idea of advancing the program to participate in this new feature with a pilot program in a Des Moines store in February of this year. After working out the details to be as efficient as possible, the initiative expanded across Iowa, Minnesota, and Nebraska in early June. The new feature for the WIC program was made possible through a grant from the Center for Nutrition and Health Impact. HHS Director Kelly Garcia says, “This is yet another incredible example of a public-private partnership that will greatly benefit individuals receiving WIC benefits in our state. The goal of this program is to provide easier access and conveniences- and every parent of young children wants the convenience while balancing work and life.” WIC members can select qualifying food items online in the Hy-Vee app and enter their eWIC card numbers during checkout. The WIC program was established nationwide in 1974, celebrating 50 years of supporting mothers, children, and families in Iowa, assisting them to live healthier lives. WIC provides supplemental nutritious food, health care referrals, breastfeeding support, and nutritional education to pregnant, breastfeeding, and postpartum women and infants through age five children who are at nutritional risk.
How's the economy doing? Depends on your point of view
Al Charlson is a North Central Iowa farm kid, lifelong Iowan, and retired bank trust officer. The Waverly newspaper group previously published a version of this commentary. Based on the standard measures I learned to watch over 30 years as a trust officer, the U.S. economy is in good condition. We have completed seven straight quarters of real GDP growth. Corporate profits after taxes in the first quarter or 2024 were 6.4 percent higher than a year earlier. Monthly job growth remains strong, and unemployment has been 4 percent or lower every month since January 2022.

Forecast: Storm Chances the Next 2 Evenings
Storms have already started popping up in spots as I type this late Saturday afternoon, with more on the way out of Nebraska as a disturbance moves across Iowa. On Sunday, a cold front will cross the state late and kick off another round of storms, though this second round doesn’t look to be as […]
