Columbia University President Resigns

NEW YORK — The president of Columbia University is resigning, amid complaints from both sides about pro-Palestinian protests on campus, and questions about her management.

Minouche Shafik only became president of New York City’s Ivy League school in July 2023, becoming the first woman ever named to the post. On-campus protests marked her tenure – as did accusations she was essentially permitting anti-semitism.

She called in police to clear protests twice – including after protestors took over a university building. Shafik mentioned the role that has played in her resignation, effective immediately.

Dr. Katrina Armstrong, the dean of Columbia’s medical school, will take over as interim president.
