Charlotte Native Anna Cockrell Wins Silver in 400-Meter Hurdles at Paris Olympics

Anna Cockrell , a Charlotte native, earned a silver medal in the women’s 400-meter hurdles on Thursday night, racing in front of a sold-out crowd at Stade de France.

She clocked a personal best time of 51.87 seconds, securing her first Olympic medal.

Cockrell came in just behind her USA teammate, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone , who claimed gold with a world record time of 50.37 seconds. Cockrell competed alongside defending Olympic champion McLaughlin-Levrone and Jasmine Jones . Femke Bol of the Netherlands rounded out the podium with a bronze medal.

The 26-year-old began her track career at Charlotte’s Providence Day School before attending the University of Southern California. She improved her season’s best by running 52.90 seconds in her semifinal on Tuesday, marking her third time breaking the 53-second barrier in her career.
