Big Ten Football Championship Game Stays in Indy Through 2028

INDIANAPOLIS –The Big Ten Football Championship Game will be played at Lucas Oil Stadium in downtown Indianapolis through 2028. That announcement was made Tuesday morning by Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti.

He also mentioned that alternative sites could be explored in the future. The league’s title game has been played in Indianapolis since its inception in 2011.

“It’s really important that markets around the country get to experience Big Ten championships. “It’s a really good way to connect the conference. So over time, you’ll start to see the geographic footprint expand,” said Petitti.

This is also a year where the Big Ten is welcoming four new schools to put the conference at 18. Those are USC, Oregon, UCLA, and Washington. That’s the number Petitti says he’s happy with at this time.

“A lot of work had to be done to integrate USC, UCLA, and we started that work over immediately when we added Oregon and Washington,” Petitti said. “So I think we’re really comfortable with where we are. We’ve got to get this conference right, and that’s where our focus is.”

This will also be the first season of the expanded 12 team playoff for college football.

“The new expanded college football playoffs will give more Big Ten teams the opportunity to compete for a national championship,” Petitti said.

Michigan beat Iowa in the championship last year. Michigan went onto become the eventual College Football Playoff champions.
