INDIANAPOLIS — Agustin Canapino’s time in the NTT IndyCar Series has come to an abrupt end.

It was announced on Wednesday that Canapino and Juncos-Hollinger Racing have “mutually parted ways.” This was Canapino’s second season with the team after having shown some growth in North American open-wheel racing.

“We commend Agustin for taking the leap into open-wheel racing with us over the last year and a half, not only learning a completely new style of racing from his impressive and storied career but also moving to the US and learning the language to join our series,” JHR said in a statement.

Canapino is from Argentina where he is regarded as a racing legend having won four series championships in Turismo Carretera, a stock touring car racing series in Argentina.

He was brought in as part of Juncos-Hollinger’s push to bring more international drivers into the fold of IndyCar racing.

However, in recent months Canapino has been the subject of social media turmoil that has surrounded the team. Argentinian fans of his went as far as making death threats against the likes of Callum Illot and Theo Pourchaire, both of whom were involved in either wrecks or racing incidents with Canapino both in the 2023 and 2024 seasons.

As those threats continued to surround the team, Canapino had what many would consider to be a less-than-acceptable response, after more threats were directed at Theo Pourchaire following a wreck between them in Detroit.

“I have not seen a single death threat directed at those who claim to have received them, ” Canapino wrote in his response.

The response led to Arrow McLaren severing a technical partnership it had with Juncos-Hollinger, who decided to hold Canapino out of the car for the following race at Road America. He was back in the car for the following five races where he finished outside the Top 20 in four of them.

During his brief time in IndyCar, Canapino never finished inside the Top 10 (sans a 10th place finish at the non-points race at Thermal this season). It is said that Canapino plans to return to Argentina to race in Turismo Carretera, but nothing has been confirmed as of yet.
