Colts Kicker Matt Gay On New Kickoff Format

The Indianapolis Colts, and the rest of the NFL, will still be adjusting to the new kickoff rules when the regular season begins next month.

It’s been one of the highlights of the preseason so far. Teams, fans, and even officials are all trying to understand the rule in real-time, and it’s led to some interesting moments. This is going to continue, as teams test the limits of what is allowed and what isn’t. While the new rules have undoubtedly added more intrigue to a play that had essentially become meaningless, and the new kickoff format will seem normal, it’s going to take some time for it to happen.

During the Thursday edition of The Ride With JMV, Colts kicker Matt Gay stopped by and spoke to John about how he’s adjusting to the new format.

“It’s taken some getting used to. We’ve done it in practice and stuff, and in that preseason game it felt a little weird being back there by myself…All offseason we were messing with it, leaning the ball different ways on the tee, trying to hit some weird soccer style kicks and things like that, and then they came out a couple of weeks ago and said ‘Your not allowed to do that.’ So that whole offseason of kind of working those kicks went out the window…So now it’s just what works best, short kicks, long kicks? Do you want to give your team time to get down there and cover, or do you want to try and hit it short to where it compacts it up and so everything’s different, we’re going through different situations and trying to figure out what works best for our team and our cover team. It’s different because hangtime, things we’ve been doing for 5-6 years [during] my career just no longer really matter.”
