A historic church situated in the heart of Lexington might be on the brink of a new beginning.

For years, the New Day Community Church, positioned near North Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in downtown Lexington, served as a gathering place for hundreds. Now vacant, a group of siblings aims to rejuvenate this once-sacred space—a revitalization they believe is crucially needed.

Humza Qureshi, from the Qureshi Development Group, expressed, "Through our association with the share center, we've witnessed a substantial demand for affordable housing in Lexington, particularly in this community. The supply falls short, while the demand is exceptionally high. This challenge isn't unique to this area alone but is pervasive throughout Lexington. Through our work in the share center and mosque, we've intimately observed this pressing need."

Addressing this demand is the goal for the Qureshi siblings. Their proposal outlines plans for 20 multi-family units, all offered at rents below $800 per month, coupled with convenient access to public transportation. They also intend to accept housing vouchers.

Hera Qureshi, also from the Qureshi Development Group, highlighted, "Social service agencies like AVOL, Salvation Army, and others have a waitlist with a significant percentage—ranging from 60% to 75%—of individuals without vehicles, relying on public transportation. In this area, having a Lextran stop merely two blocks away is advantageous."

Anticipated changes are on the horizon, yet the historical significance embedded within these walls remains unchanged. In adherence to the Federal Section 106 review process, the space undergoes scrutiny to ensure the preservation of historical elements throughout the planning phase.

Aqsa Qureshi, part of the Qureshi Development Group, explained, "Given the building's historic nature, we've conducted an extensive environmental analysis covering aspects like lead, radon, and mold. Some stained glass contains lead, which we endeavor to conserve. For portions we can't preserve, we're collaborating with local artists to explore repurposing these elements into captivating artworks to adorn the space."

Support for this initiative has been consistent, with neighbors like B Mead expressing enthusiasm for the change.

B Mead, a nearby resident, remarked, "This building has stood empty for as long as I've resided on this block. Amidst an affordable housing crisis, it's only logical to utilize vacant buildings to accommodate people in need of homes."
