Olympic events certainly aren’t a new concept. These sporting events have occurred in some form for thousands of years. The Olympic competition originated in Ancient Greece when athletes would compete in Olympia. However, the modern version of the Olympics started in 1896 .
From the number of athletes competing to the type of sports included, many things have changed since the Athens 1896 Olympics. The first modern Olympic event didn’t allow any female athletes to compete but there were 22 female athletes competing at the Paris 1900 Summer Olympics.
The Olympic medal designs are another aspect of the Olympics that has changed over the years. Although some designs have reappeared at multiple events, the medals at each Olympic event are unique in some way. Olympic athletes such as Michael Phelps, who have won a large number of Olympic medals get the privilege of having medals with many different designs.
With the start of the next Summer Olympics on July 26, 2024, it’s interesting to look at how the medal designs have changed throughout the years. There’s no doubt the medal ceremonies are an incredible time for winning athletes. Whether an athlete wins a bronze, silver, or gold medal, their Olympic medals are something they will cherish for the rest of their lives. A 1968 Winter Olympic medal was displayed at a press preview event in 2020. This was the first time in Olympic history that a different medal was created for each Olympic discipline. One side had the official emblem while the other had an image representing the specific discipline.
