    Driver charged with DUI after hitting NLVPD patrol vehicle on freeway

    LAS VEGAS ( KLAS ) — A North Las Vegas Police Department patrol vehicle was sideswiped by an alleged DUI driver on the freeway Thursday night while its officer was assisting another collision, police said.

    On Thursday, Aug. 22 at around 8:45 p.m., an officer with the North Las Vegas Police Department was on patrol when he came across a two-vehicle collision on southbound I-15 near Cheyenne Avenue.

    The officer had both vehicles moved onto the shoulder of the freeway and was waiting for Nevada State Police to respond when a gray Volkswagen sedan approached the collision scene.

    According to police, the driver of the sedan, Yamila Perdomo-Hernandez, 52, failed to maintain her lane of travel and sideswiped the patrol vehicle. The officer was not in his vehicle at the time of the collision was not injured.

    Perdomo-Hernandez remained on scene and showed signs of impairment. Police arrested her and booked her into the North Las Vegas Community Correctional Center on charges of DUI and failure to maintain a lane of travel.

    “We want to remind the community to don’t drink and drive, find a sober driver, and to slow down and move over as you approach stopped emergency vehicles,” the department wrote in a release. “As we are approaching Labor Day weekend (here soon), NLVPD will be joining forces with other law enforcement agencies in the valley to look for impaired drivers, reckless driving, and distracted drivers.”
