LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Where does Henderson City Councilman Dan Shaw live?

The question is a distraction, according to Shaw’s campaign for re-election, which argued against a complaint filed by a former Clark County official pointing to a Utah ranch, state law and private plane.

On Wednesday, Former Clark County Commissioner Chris Giunchigliani filed a complaint against Shaw, who is seeking re-election, alleging he was not truthful about his Henderson residency on his declaration of candidacy.

“My concern is rooted in the principle of fairness and the integrity of the electoral process,” Giunchigliani wrote. “Voters have a right to expect that all candidates meet the legal qualifications for office. We trust that the government agencies to which we filed a complaint will conduct a prompt and thorough investigation into this matter.”

The 8 News Now Investigators found Shaw does have an address at a Utah ranch and is c urrently the President and CEO of the Days of ’47 Rodeo , one of the state’s largest and longest-running rodeos.

District Attorney Steve Wolfson, Attorney General Aaron Ford, and Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar were named in a Wednesday press release as receiving the complaint requesting to review material related to the allegation.

Shaw responded via email to 8 News Now regarding the complaint citing his history in Henderson.

“40 years ago, I stopped off in Henderson on the way to a job interview and I’ve lived here ever since,” Shaw wrote.

The complaint is politically motivated according to Shaw which pointed to the other candidate for Ward 2 of the Henderson City Council, Monica Larson.

“This is an attempt by my opponent to distract voters from the fact that she only recently moved here and has just lived in Henderson for ‘a cup of coffee,’ as the saying goes,” he wrote. “My opponent has never served on a city or community board and does not have the experience in Henderson needed to help solve some of our biggest challenges.”

Larson pointed to several community awareness campaigns she’s led while reacting to Shaw’s response, in a statement sent via email to 8 News Now.

“I believe you must live in Ward 2 permanently and be here 24/7 365 days a year if you’re going to properly serve the constituents,” Larson said. “My solutions are tangible, not just talk. I have a “cup of coffee” every day in Ward 2, meeting community members and businesses and I never see Dan Shaw.”

Larson is a Henderson resident who was born on the south side of Chicago, according to her campaign website. She has cited a reason for her campaign is concerns with transparency from current city council members including Shaw.

At the center of the complaint is a Henderson home for Shaw located in a MacDonald Highlands neighborhood which is listed as a permanent address, but not registered in his voter registry.

Sources tell 8 News Now Shaw recently moved into the newly built address named in the complaint and said Shaw is updating the address on his voter registration from a Black Mountain neighborhood address, adding it did not prevent him from voting in the primary.

The 8 News Now Investigators, acting on information on papers Shaw filed for re-election, witnessed the councilman exiting the MacDonald Highlands property.

A private jet used to fly from Henderson Executive Airport to a Payson, Utah address by Shaw is also named in the complaint as further alleged proof the councilman does not predominantly live in Henderson.

Sources tell 8 News Now Shaw does charter a private plane with three other business partners who live in three different states and said Shaw does own a second home in Utah where he visits his grandchildren and competes in the “world’s largest rodeo” in Utah in July. Shaw competes regionally as a professional heeler in roping events, according to sources.

Regarding the length of his Henderson residency, Shaw pointed to his time as the chair of the City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Board from July 1987 to June 1999 where he oversaw park and facility development for several projects.

“Including the Downtown Recreation Center, Henderson Multigenerational Center, Henderson Pavilion, Mission Hills Parks and Russel Roads Sports Complex,” Shaw wrote. “I also served as chair of the City of Henderson Planning Commission from July 1999 to June 2010, during which time the city’s master plans were revised and the city’s Development Services section was implemented.”

Shaw argued the complaint against him was a “distraction,” and instead pointed to other voter issues he felt were more pertinent.

“[The complaint] is not what our city needs right now as we address serious issues like inflation, housing challenges, growth, and public safety,” Shaw wrote. “I’m proud to call Henderson my home.”

8 News Now previously reported on other obstacles facing the Shaw campaign including a series of lawsuits targeting a company, Green Arrow Solutions, associated with the candidate.
