BOYNE CITY — On Aug.19 around 12:20 p.m., Boyne City Police officers were sent to a single-vehicle accident involving a pedestrian on State Street (M75 N) just east of the North East Street intersection.

Preliminary accident investigation findings show that the pedestrian was attempting to cross State Street outside of the designated crosswalk and was struck head-on by a Dodge Ram pickup truck, police said.

The driver of the truck was identified as a 25-year-old male resident of Grand Rapids. The pedestrian was identified as a 78-year-old male from Boyne City.

Boyne City EMS and fire department personnel responded to the scene to render immediate aid, police said.

The pedestrian was then taken to an area hospital where he later died from his injuries, police said.

The driver of the truck was wearing his seatbelt and had no reported injuries, police said. The driver was not suspected of impairment, reckless or distracted motor vehicle operation. However, standard roadside sobriety evaluations were administered and toxicology samples taken and submitted for analysis.

Charlevoix County Sheriff’s Office accident investigators were called to the scene to aid in the investigation. Additionally, Boyne City Police Department drones were deployed to capture aerial images of the crash scene for reconstruction purposes.

The crash remains under investigation pending the results of lab tests and final reports from accident investigators.
