From 2015-2019, Dabo Swinney led Clemson to the College Football Playoff four out of five seasons, winning the CFP National Championship in 2016 and 2018. In October 2018, the landscape of college football was forever altered with the introduction of the transfer portal. Programs have utilized the transfer portal to add talent like they recruit the high school talent pool. Swinney has shunned that approach, refusing to add scholarship players from the transfer portal. The Tigers have not made the CFP the last four seasons, and in 2023 Clemson failed to win 10 games, the first time since the 2010 6-7 season. Clemson was one of four programs not to add from the portal this offseason, with the other three being the service academies. Now, No. 14 Clemson prepares to take on No. 1 Georgia as 13.5-point underdogs in the 2024 season opener, with the Dawgs having added nine scholarship players via the portal.
