California ranks 41st in the United States for average monthly energy costs, with residents paying an average of $476 per month, according to a recent WalletHub study. This ranking places California among the states with lower energy expenses, thanks to its low consumption of electricity and natural gas.

The WalletHub analysis compared total monthly energy bills across all 50 states, considering electricity, natural gas, motor fuel, and home heating oil costs. Despite having the third highest electricity prices and the highest motor-fuel prices in the nation, California's overall energy consumption is relatively low, especially in natural gas and electricity, contributing to its lower average costs.

In contrast, Wyoming tops the list with the highest monthly energy costs at $1,591, driven by high gas and residential oil consumption. Other states with high energy costs include North Dakota, Iowa, Montana, and Minnesota. Meanwhile, New Mexico boasts the lowest average monthly energy costs at $376, followed by Arizona, Kansas, Texas, and Nebraska.
