The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting in northern Banks County that left two people dead.

The shooting happened Tuesday morning at a home on Cedar Drive, south of Lee Arrendale State Prison. No law officers were injured, a GBI press release says.

According to the Bureau, Forsyth County sheriff's deputies were at the home around 9:30 a.m. on July 16 to serve an arrest warrant. When deputies entered the home around 11:05 a.m., a shooting took place, and two people were killed.

“Banks County Sheriff’s Office deputies were also at the scene to provide support but were not directly involved in the incident,” says GBI Public Affairs Director Nelly Miles.

Miles says a GBI Medical Examiner will perform autopsies on the two people who died. Authorities have not released their names pending notification of next of kin.

In keeping with standard protocol, the Banks County Sheriff’s Office asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation into the shooting. Miles says that the investigation is ongoing. Once completed, the case will be turned over to the Banks County District Attorney’s Office for review.
