    Issue Overview

North Carolina began issuing tax refunds on March 18, but some residents are still waiting months later. A Raleigh resident, frustrated with nearly a five-month delay, expressed their concerns to The News & Observer.

    Causes of Delays

The North Carolina Department of Revenue (NCDOR) cited several reasons for the delays:

    1. Identity Protection Measures: Additional reviews are in place to protect taxpayers’ identities and ensure they receive the correct refunds.
    2. Common Issues:
      • Math Errors: Errors in calculations on tax returns.
      • Multiple Forms: Using more than one form type.
      • Incomplete Returns: Missing or incomplete information on returns.

    How to Check Refund Status

Taxpayers can check the status of their refunds through:

    • Where’s My Refund Tool: Available on the NCDOR website.
    • Office of the Taxpayer Advocate: Call 919-715-2080 for assistance.

    Interest on Late Refunds

If a refund is not issued within 45 days from the due date, the date the return was filed, or the date of the overpayment (whichever is later), the NCDOR will include interest on the refund.
