A Look Back at the Fourth of July's Origins

Every year on July 4th, the United States bursts into red, white, and blue as Americans celebrate Independence Day. But what exactly are we celebrating? The story goes back to 1776 when the thirteen American colonies fought for independence from Great Britain.

On July 4th, 1776, the Continental Congress formally adopted the Declaration of Independence, a document by Thomas Jefferson that declared the thirteen colonies free and independent states. This marked a pivotal moment in American history, severing ties with British rule and establishing the United States as a new nation.

The Declaration of Independence wasn't just a declaration of separation but a powerful statement of ideals. It outlined the principles of liberty, equality, and the right to self-government, inspiring generations of Americans and people around the world.

Today, many Americans have forgotten that sense of pride and unity.

American Pride Remains Near Historic Low

A recent Gallup poll shows that American pride remains near record lows. Only 39% of U.S. adults report feeling "extremely proud" to be American, a figure statistically unchanged from the record low of 38% recorded in 2023.

While the "extremely proud" category remains stagnant, the broader picture shows 67% of Americans expressing at least "very proud" feelings towards their country. This combined figure is also down slightly from previous years, aligning with the historically subdued levels of national pride.

The poll further reveals a partisan divide in these sentiments. Republicans are significantly more likely to report extreme pride (60%) compared to Democrats (29%) and Independents (33%).

May July 4, 2024, Stir Patriotism

Today, the Fourth of July is more than just fireworks and barbecues. It's a day to reflect on the core values upon which the United States was founded and to celebrate the ongoing pursuit of a more perfect union. It's a time to come together as a nation, acknowledge our history, and recommit ourselves to the ideals enshrined in the Declaration of Independence.
