Minnesota Vikings owner Mark Wilf comments on potential extensions for Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and Kevin O'Connell

The Minnesota Vikings are going into year three of their current era of head coach Kevin O'Connell and general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah. Things are looking promising going into year three with rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy in the fold.

When the Vikings hired both O'Connell and Adofo-Mensah, they signed them to four-year contracts, which felt odd at the time. New head coaches and general managers usually get five-year or six-year contracts at minimum but four years felt a little short.

Because of the short nature of their contracts, questions have started to percolate about the status of their contracts. Will the Vikings extend them before the start of the season? Owner Mark Wilf was asked that question and he shot down that notion.

It's important to note what ESPN's Kevin Seifert relayed about the conversation with Wilf that he won't mention any litmus tests for a possible extension. The second question is if its a big deal that they won't be having discussions before the end of the 2024 season? The answer to that is no.

Most contract extension talks will begin after the second-to-last season of the contract. Sometimes, discussions will begin earlier but those are usually five year contracts. We saw that with both wide receiver Justin Jefferson and left tackle Christian Darrisaw .

It feels like a big deal, but it's not a worry unless they go into year four without a new contract.
